Is dental sedation safe?

Dental sedation is a safe and effective additional service that can be added to dental treatments to help the patient remain calm during their visit. Before sedation is recommended for your child, we will review their current health status, any medications they’re taking, and their medical history to determine if sedation is the best option for them. We never administer sedation without parent permission, and we will be happy to address any questions or concerns you may have before your child’s visit.

Can kids return to school after receiving sedation?

Whether or not your child will be able to return to school or their normal routines right after their visit will depend on the treatment and the type of sedation that they received. Patients who undergo minor procedures or utilize nitrous oxide are typically given the O.K. to return to school post-treatment. Since oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia take longer to wear off, it’s highly recommended that patients are taken straight home and allowed to rest for the remainder of the day.

Does dental sedation come with side effects?

Dental sedation can come with some mild effects. Common side effects include headache, nausea, dry mouth, and dizziness, but they should dissipate within 24 hours of the patient’s treatment. If your child experiences side effects that last more than a day or they develop a fever at any point, please let our team know. In general, most kids are just worn out after their visits, and the best thing to do is to let them take it easy and rest as much as possible.
