Are pediatric dentists qualified to work with kids with special needs?
Pediatric dentists attend dental school just like general dentists, and then they actually complete a few additional years of education to learn about working with pediatric patients specifically. It’s during this training that pediatric dentists obtain a lot of knowledge about working with patients who have special needs, which is why some patients with special needs visit pediatric dentists even as adults. Our compassionate team would be happy to cater to the specific needs of your child to help them have pleasant and productive dental visits!
What should I do before my child’s first visit?
Before your child comes to see us for a routine appointment or procedure, we recommend getting in touch with our office beforehand so we can discuss what your child will need from us to have a successful visit. We also recommend that you discuss dentistry and why it’s important with your child or read them a story about dental visits so they can know what to expect. You are also welcome to bring them in for a quick tour of our office before their first appointment so we can meet them and they can become more familiar with our office and team.
What if my child has difficulty sitting still?
Some kids have a hard time keeping still for extended periods of time, which can make receiving dental care difficult. Fortunately, our office offers dental sedation, which can help kids sit still and relieve any anxious thoughts they may have as well. Our office provides both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, both of which work well for dental anxiety and helping kids stay calm and cooperative. In cases where a child cannot remain still or they have an extensive treatment planned, we also work with Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and provide IV sedation on an outpatient basis at their facility.
