While dental cleanings play a big role in helping your child keep their teeth and gums healthy, there are other preventive measures like fluoride treatments that can strengthen and help protect your child’s teeth from tooth decay. Many times fluoride treatments are available after dental cleanings and exams. Fluoride treatments are another step in keeping your child’s smile healthy and cavity-free. Please give our office a call or send us a message to schedule your child’s visit!

Is fluoride safe for children?

Fluoride is a natural mineral proven to build strong teeth and prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is often found in food and water. When correctly applied and measured, fluoride is safe for children and teeth. At Cibolo Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we consider your child’s age and oral health when determining the correct amount of fluoride that can safely help prevent tooth decay.

How does fluoride treatment work?

Fluoride treatments are a quick and non-invasive process! Fluoride can be applied either topically or systemically by consumption. When applied topically, a foam, gel, or varnish is applied to the surface of your child’s teeth. The varnish will harden and coat the surface of teeth. When hardened, fluoride works to repair small areas of decay and allows the teeth to absorb it. We suggest keeping the varnish on for at least an hour before eating, drinking, or brushing.

How often should my child get fluoride treatments?

The American Dental Association and our team recommend a professional fluoride treatment every three, six, or twelve months. When you visit our office, we’ll discuss your child’s fluoride intake and determine how often they should receive fluoride treatments. While this frequency will vary on your child’s oral health and tooth decay, it is usually enough to receive fluoride treatments after dental cleanings, which are encouraged to happen every six months to help prevent tooth decay!
