Are adult braces used purely for cosmetic purposes?
Many patients seek orthodontic treatment to achieve a more symmetrical smile, but there are also many cases in which a dental professional will recommend adult braces to treat a non-cosmetic dental issue. If a patient has an overbite or underbite, for example, braces can help make it easier for them to eat, and they can help reduce issues related to TMJ and bruxism. Having straight teeth can also make it much easier to brush and floss each tooth thoroughly, which helps reduce the patient’s risk of developing tooth decay or gum disease.
Do braces take longer for adults?
On average, braces take longer to straighten teeth for older patients than younger patients. This is because when a patient is a child, preteen, or teen, their teeth and jaws are still growing, which makes the teeth easier to shift. However, it only takes a little longer for adults to complete their orthodontic treatment plans compared to children. Factors that play a much bigger role in the length of a patient’s treatment plan include visiting the orthodontist for regularly scheduled appointments and following the instructions that are provided to the patient.
Are adult braces covered by dental insurance?
While it’s not always common for dental insurance to completely cover the cost of orthodontic care, patients may sometimes receive partial coverage for braces, so it’s worth checking with your provider before receiving adult braces. Our practice also accepts CareCredit® payment plans, which can be used to divide the upfront cost of orthodontic treatment into smaller monthly payments.
